Mumbai: Mumbaikars woke up to partly cloudy skies and humid weather on Saturday, with the city continuing to experience unusually warm conditions despite intermittent drizzle and overcast skies. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast generally humid weather with the possibility of light showers and occasional thundercloud development over the coming days.Mumbai Sees Record High Temperatures In JuneAdding to the weather anomaly, Mumbai’s Colaba observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 30.2°C on Friday, making it the highest minimum temperature ever recorded in June. The temperature was 3.8°C above normal and surpassed previous June records, highlighting the unusually warm conditions prevailing across the city. The record-breaking night temperature comes after Mumbai witnessed multiple weather extremes this year, including heatwave conditions as early as March and some of the highest daytime temperatures recorded in recent years. The persistent heat and humidity contribute to delayed monsoon conditions and changing atmospheric patterns.Today’s Weather UpdateAccording to the IMD, temperatures on Saturday are expected to remain between 28°C and 35°C. While isolated drizzle has been reported in parts of Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region over the past few days, meteorologists clarified that these showers do not yet indicate the full-fledged onset of the southwest monsoon over the city. Air Quality Remains GoodMeanwhile, Mumbai’s air quality remained a bright spot, with the city’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 25 on Saturday morning, placing it firmly in the ‘good’ category. The improvement comes after months of fluctuating pollution levels across the metropolis. However, air quality varied across different locations. Wadala East recorded the highest AQI in the city at 80, placing it in the ‘moderate’ category. Colaba registered an AQI of 40, while eastern suburbs including Bhandup and Mulund continued to remain in the ‘good’ range.Several parts of south and western Mumbai reported exceptionally clean air. Andheri recorded an AQI of just 5, while Walkeshwar, Prabhadevi, Worli and Dahisar also remained comfortably within the ‘good’ category. As per standard AQI classifications, readings between 0 and 50 are considered ‘good’, 51 to 100 ‘moderate’, 101 to 200 ‘poor’, 201 to 300 ‘unhealthy’, and anything above 300 falls under the ‘severe’ category. Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has decided to permanently close 116 sub-jails across the state that were managed by the Revenue Department. The government noted that 80 of these sub-jails were already non-operational, while the remaining 36, though functional, were in poor condition. The decision marks the complete closure of magisterial jails, which were primarily used under orders issued by District Magistrates, Sub-Divisional Magistrates, and Taluqa Magistrates. Also Watch: Inmates lodged in these sub-jails, mostly under chapter proceedings dealing with civil offences, will now be shifted to district or central jails, where hardened criminals are also housed.A Government Resolution (GR) issued on Friday stated that the Sub-Jail Rule Book, 1952, has also been annulled. The concept of sub-jails originated from the authority exercised by the Revenue machinery, which includes the District Collector (who also functions as the District Magistrate), the SubDivisional Officer (SDO), who serves as the SubDivisional Magistrate, and the Tahsildar, also known as the Taluqa Magistrate. These officers dealt with minor offences, mostly of a civil nature, where police intervention was not required.Mumbai Police Nab Two Accused In Madhya Pradesh Attempted Murder Case Of Air Force Officer After Social Media Threat Under the powers vested in these magistrates by the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), chapter proceedings were initiated against individuals who disrupted public order, breached the peace, or were likely to commit a wrongful act. The CrPC has now been replaced by the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Persons produced before magistrates were required to furnish a bond of surety for good behaviour. If they failed to do so, they could be ordered to remain in sub-jails until they complied. Individuals booked under various sections of the CrPC for creating public disorder or nuisance could also face similar detention.Mumbai: BMC’s POSH Committee Submits Report In Sexual Harassment Case Against Accused Officer; SPGRC To Review Findings With most such cases now handled by the police, the concept of sub-jails has become obsolete, said a retired Revenue Department officer who previously served as a magistrate. The government’s decision follows the recommendations of a study group appointed in 2023 to examine the functioning of sub-jails. The Additional Chief Secretaries of the Home and Revenue Departments reviewed the group’s report, following which the final decision was taken. To get details on exclusive and budget-friendly property deals in Mumbai & surrounding regions, do visit: https://budgetproperties.in/

UK court has jailed an Indian-origin man, Gagandeep Singh, to 34 years in prison in the United Kingdom after being convicted of kidnapping, torturing and raping a 24-year-old woman in London. The 34-year-old was found guilty in February on two counts of rape, as well as charges of kidnapping, false imprisonment and causing grievous bodily harm with intent, following a trial at Isleworth Crown Court.Singh will serve a 34-year sentence, comprising 28 years in custody followed by a six-year extended licence period under strict restrictions. He cannot be considered for parole until he has served at least 18 years, or two-thirds of the custodial term, according to PTI.’Did You Enjoy That?’: Pakistani Asylum Seeker Rapes ‘Drunk’ UK Teen, Jailed For 10 YearsDetails of the caseThe trial heard that the victim was taken to a house in Hanwell, west London, where she was subjected to prolonged torture.”The brutality of what the victim in this case faced is unimaginable,” said Detective Constable Seetara Abdul from the Metropolitan Police’s North West Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit, who led the probe. The court heard that the victim was first asked to transport a suitcase from Thailand to the UK in June 2024. She grew suspicious and refused the request. When she arrived at Birmingham Airport, masked men forced her into a car and drove her to a house in Hanwell, west London, where Singh repeatedly raped and abused her, according to news agency PTI.Investigation and forensic breakthroughThe Met Police said that she was traumatised by the experience and initially hesitant to narrate the full truth of her ordeal to the investigators. However, with support from her mother and specialist police officers, she later provided a full account of what had happened.A key breakthrough in the case came after the victim’s mother preserved the clothes her daughter had been wearing at the time of the assault. Forensic examination later revealed a DNA match linking Singh to the offences.Victim and family response”To anyone who has experienced abuse, sexual or otherwise, please remember this: we are not the ones who should carry shame. We survive, and we go on to live again,” the survivor said, reflecting on her experience, as reported by Times of India. The victim’s mother also praised the Metropolitan Police for continuing the probe despite her daughter’s initial reluctance to proceed.

Director Imtiaz Ali’s much-awaited film Main Vaapas Aaunga finally arrived in cinemas on June 12. Starring Sharvari and Vedang Raina in the lead roles, the film also features an impressive ensemble cast including Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Banita Sandhu, Anjana Sukhani and Rajat Kapoor.Set against the backdrop of the India-Pakistan Partition, Main Vaapas Aaunga received a largely positive response from critics and audiences, with praise directed towards its performances, storytelling and emotional depth. Despite the favourable reviews and strong word of mouth, the film had a slow start at the box office. View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Free Press Journal (@freepressjournal)Main Vaapas Aaunga Box Office Collection Day 1Despite the favourable reviews and strong word-of-mouth, the film had a slow start at the box office. According to Sacnilk, the film collected Rs 1.15 crore in India on its opening day from 2,302 shows across the country on its first Friday. With this, the film’s India gross collection has reached Rs 1.38 crore so far. One of the major reasons behind its modest opening could be the intense competition from multiple releases. The film faced a box office clash with Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past, Bharat Bhagya Vidhata, and Governor, all of which targeted different audience segments. While the opening numbers may not be extraordinary, films in this genre often rely on positive word-of-mouth and sustained audience interest over the weekend.BudgetWhile there has been no official confirmation from the makers regarding the film’s production cost, several reports suggest that Main Vaapas Aaunga has been mounted on a whopping budget of approximately Rs 70 crore. Given its modest opening-day collection of Rs 1.15 crore, the film will need to see substantial growth over the weekend and maintain a strong run in the coming weeks to emerge as a box-office success.Main Vaapas Aaunga ReviewThe Free Press Journal gave Main Vaapas Aaunga 4 out of 5 stars and wrote, “The film could have been slightly shorter, especially in the first half. But that’s just a small complaint in an otherwise beautiful cinematic experience. Main Vaapas Aaunga is packed with love, loss, longing and hope. It is emotional and heartbreaking. This is the kind of film that stays with you long after the credits roll.”

Activists questioned whether the decision was taken with the concurrence of Vijay or the new DVAC director, A Arun IPS, who took charge on May 25. TVK supporters shared the FPJ report on social media and urged Vijay to reverse the decision, noting that the party had aggressively positioned DMK as their main political opponent before the elections.
