CBI Books Kishore Biyani in ₹904 Crore Future Retail Bank Fraud Case

NEW DELHI, 6th Nov: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has opened a major bank fraud investigation against Future Retail Ltd, its promoters Kishore Biyani and Rakesh Biyani, and unidentified public servants and private individuals. The case concerns an alleged ₹904.32 crore loss to the State Bank of India (SBI), with investigators examining suspected diversion and misuse of loan funds.

The investigation has already moved beyond paperwork. The CBI registered an FIR on November 4 and conducted searches at multiple locations in Mumbai, recovering and seizing documents considered relevant to the case.

Future Retail Bank Fraud: CBI Registers ₹904.32 Crore Case

The CBI registered the case following a complaint from SBI’s Stressed Assets Management Branch-III in Mumbai. The complaint names Future Retail and its promoters, managing directors, executive directors and guarantors, including Kishore Biyani and Rakesh Biyani.

Unknown public servants and other unidentified individuals have also been named.

According to the CBI, the accused face allegations of criminal conspiracy and cheating, along with offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The alleged financial damage stands at ₹904.32 crore. That is the amount SBI claims it lost through the suspected activities under investigation.

The agency’s case centres on the alleged misuse of credit facilities obtained from SBI and a consortium of nine banks.

Importantly, these are allegations at the investigation stage. The registration of an FIR does not establish guilt, and the claims will have to be tested through the legal process.

CBI Alleges Diversion of Bank Loan Funds

One of the central allegations concerns how Future Retail allegedly used the money borrowed from financial institutions.

According to the CBI, the company obtained credit facilities for specified purposes but did not utilise the funds in accordance with the sanctioned terms.

Investigators suspect that portions of the borrowed money were diverted through associate companies and connected entities.

The CBI has alleged that this diversion involved siphoning funds away from their intended use, ultimately causing financial losses to SBI.

This aspect could become critical to the investigation. The agency is examining the movement of funds, the entities involved and the responsibilities of individuals connected with the transactions.

The involvement of multiple financial institutions also makes the case significant. The complaint refers to credit facilities extended by SBI as well as a consortium comprising nine banks.

However, the precise flow of funds and the individual roles of those named remain matters for investigation.

Kishore Biyani and Rakesh Biyani Named in the FIR

The investigation directly involves Future Retail’s promoter Kishore Biyani and his brother Rakesh Biyani.

The CBI has named both individuals in the case alongside other company officials and unidentified persons.

The allegations include criminal conspiracy to cheat banks and offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The agency is also examining the possible involvement of public servants. Their identities and alleged roles have not been disclosed in the available statement.

No immediate reaction from Future Retail was available following the registration of the case.

The investigation will need to establish whether the alleged diversion of funds resulted from coordinated decisions, who authorised the transactions and whether individuals outside the company played a role.

Mumbai Searches Yield Documents for Investigation

Following the FIR registered on November 4, the CBI conducted searches at multiple premises in Mumbai.

During these operations, investigators recovered and seized documents described as relevant to the investigation.

Such material could help the agency examine financial transactions, corporate relationships and the utilisation of credit facilities.

The CBI has not disclosed the complete details of the seized documents or identified every premises searched.

The agency is continuing its investigation to establish the full extent of the alleged conspiracy.

It is also attempting to identify the roles of all individuals involved, including public servants and private persons, while tracing the end-use of the loan funds.

From Big Bazaar to a Major Banking Investigation

Future Retail was once a prominent name in India’s organised retail industry.

The company operated several retail formats, including Big Bazaar, Fashion@Big Bazaar and Foodhall. Its business also covered general trading in fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and fashion products through its stores.

Its retail operations made the company a familiar name among Indian consumers.

Now, its former business leadership faces scrutiny over allegations involving a substantial amount of bank credit.

The ₹904.32 crore figure makes the investigation financially significant, but the immediate focus remains on evidence. Investigators must establish how the loans were used, whether funds were diverted and who was responsible for the alleged transactions.

For the banking sector, the case also highlights the importance of monitoring large corporate credit exposures and tracking the movement of borrowed funds.

What Happens Next in the Future Retail Bank Fraud Case?

The CBI has indicated that its investigation remains underway.

The agency is working to determine the complete scope of the alleged conspiracy, establish the responsibilities of those named and trace the money obtained through bank credit facilities.

The documents seized during the Mumbai searches are expected to form part of the investigative process.

The investigation will also examine the alleged involvement of unidentified public servants and private individuals.

For now, the ₹904.32 crore figure represents the alleged loss cited in SBI’s complaint. Whether the evidence ultimately establishes criminal wrongdoing will depend on the findings of the investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.

The case puts Future Retail’s former promoters under serious scrutiny. But the next decisive development will come from the evidence, not the allegations alone.
