Puducherry Assembly Elections: 7 Big Claims Shaping Battle

04/04/26: The Puducherry Assembly Elections are heating up. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge says victory is within reach. Prime Minister Narendra Modi says the opposition has no vision. Someone’s clearly wrong.

Puducherry may be small, but politically it punches above its weight. The Puducherry Assembly Elections reveal a familiar pattern in Indian politics. Competing narratives dominate the conversation long before voters speak.

Kharge is betting on alliance strength and anti-incumbency sentiment. Modi is betting on development messaging and organisational strength.

Both strategies are rational. Both carry risks.

In a 30-seat Assembly, even minor vote swings can flip the entire outcome. That’s the brutal mathematics of small legislatures.

The real lesson is simple. Campaign rhetoric grabs headlines, but voter turnout decides governments. And Puducherry voters have a track record of showing up and surprising political analysts.

Why the Puducherry Assembly Elections Matter

Puducherry Assembly Elections: Congress vs BJP Clash Intensifies - ironaadmi

Puducherry is small on the map but politically noisy. Just 30 seats in the Legislative Assembly. Yet every election here turns into a full-blown national debate.

This time is no different.

The Puducherry Assembly Elections have turned into a contest of narratives. Congress and DMK say the people are with them. The BJP-led alliance says the opposition only wants power.

Classic Indian politics. Loud. Sharp. Relentless.

Polling is scheduled for April 9. Votes will be counted on May 4. The current Assembly’s term ends on June 15. The clock is ticking.

Mallikarjun Kharge’s Confidence in Congress–DMK Alliance

Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge sounded confident while addressing the media and a public gathering in Puducherry.

His message was straightforward.

The Congress–DMK alliance is in a strong position.

According to Kharge, voters are backing the opposition alliance rather than the BJP. He even took a direct jab at Narendra Modi, saying the Prime Minister is dreaming if he believes BJP will dominate the region.

Kharge argued that the alliance between Indian National Congress and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has historically performed well in Tamil Nadu politics.

His claim?

The alliance will win Puducherry and form the next government.

Bold words. Elections have a habit of humbling bold words.

Allegations Against the AINRC–BJP Government

Kharge didn’t stop with election predictions.

He accused the ruling coalition led by All India N.R. Congress and supported by the Bharatiya Janata Party of corruption and misgovernance.

According to him, corruption is widespread in the Union Territory.

He even referred to what he described as a “30 percent commission” culture within the administration.

Kharge also criticised the central government’s anti-corruption claims, alleging that economic benefits are being concentrated in the hands of industrialist Gautam Adani.

These accusations, naturally, are political claims made during campaign season. In India, election speeches often double as courtroom arguments without judges.

The Demand for Full Statehood

Another major issue raised during the campaign is Puducherry’s political status.

Kharge argued that Puducherry should be granted full statehood.

Currently, as a Union Territory, governance involves the Lieutenant Governor alongside the elected government. According to Kharge, this structure leads to interference in administrative processes.

The demand for greater autonomy has surfaced before in Puducherry politics. Whether it becomes a decisive voter issue remains unclear.

But it definitely adds fuel to the election debate.

Concerns Over Liquor Shops and Drug Abuse

Kharge also criticised the government over social issues.

He claimed that the current administration has allowed the opening of around 450 liquor shops and restaurants in the territory.

His argument was blunt.

Instead of focusing on providing clean drinking water and development, the government is allegedly prioritising alcohol sales.

He further raised concerns about rising cases of drug abuse and the presence of drug networks in the Union Territory.

Whether voters see this as a serious governance issue or campaign rhetoric will become clear on election day.

PM Modi’s Counterattack

Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded strongly to the opposition’s claims.

In a post on X, Modi accused opposition parties of lacking a clear vision for Puducherry’s development.

His criticism was sharp.

According to him, rival parties want to use Puducherry as an “ATM.”

In other words, the Prime Minister suggested that opposition parties view the Union Territory as a political resource rather than a place that needs governance.

Modi also referenced feedback from BJP booth workers in the territory. One party worker, he said, described the opposition’s agenda as creating a “WEAK Puducherry.”

Political messaging rarely gets subtler than that.

NDA’s Development Pitch

While attacking the opposition, Modi also highlighted what he described as development achievements under the NDA government.

He praised the administration led by Chief Minister N. Rangasamy.

According to the Prime Minister, the NDA government has made progress across sectors in the Union Territory.

Infrastructure, governance, and development are central themes in the BJP campaign narrative.

It’s a familiar strategy.

Focus on performance. Paint the opposition as power-hungry.

Indian elections run on this script more often than Bollywood runs on slow-motion entries.

A Look at the 2021 Election Results

The previous Puducherry Assembly Elections offer useful context.

In the 2021 election:

• All India N.R. Congress emerged as the largest party with 10 seats
• DMK won 6 seats
• BJP secured 6 seats
• Congress also won 6 seats

Voter turnout reached an impressive 84.8 percent.

That’s higher than many national elections.

Go back further to the 2016 elections and the picture changes again.

Congress secured a majority with 15 seats. AINRC won eight seats. AIADMK captured four seats. DMK took two.

Turnout then was also high at 83.6 percent.

Which means one thing.

Puducherry voters show up. And when voters show up, predictions get risky.

What to Watch in the 2026 Election

Several factors could shape the outcome of the Puducherry Assembly Elections.

Alliance arithmetic is one.

Campaign messaging is another.

But perhaps the most important variable is voter sentiment. Small territories often deliver big political surprises.

The contest is essentially between the Congress–DMK alliance and the NDA-led coalition.

Both sides claim momentum. Both sides claim public support.

One side will be right.

The counting on May 4 will settle the argument.
