New Delhi, 23.08.26: The Bangladesh Hindu family murder case has taken a disturbing turn after police detained two cousins over the deaths of a retired teacher, his wife, daughter and 12-year-old son in Rangpur. Investigators allege the killings followed a confrontation over Yaba use on the family’s rooftop.

A retired Hindu schoolteacher and three members of his family were found dead inside their home in Bangladesh’s Rangpur city, days after relatives lost contact with them.

Police have detained two cousins, identified as Mughdho and Siddhartha, in connection with the deaths of 65-year-old Ganapati Chakraborty, his 50-year-old wife Pritilata Chakraborty, their 23-year-old daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi and their 12-year-old son Priyam Chakraborty.

The case began with a missing-family concern and quickly turned into a murder investigation.

The family stopped responding to relatives and all four mobile phones were switched off from Thursday night. Their bodies were eventually recovered from their locked home at around 11.30 pm on Saturday.

Police say the killings followed an alleged confrontation between Ganapati and two men who were taking Yaba on the rooftop.

And then came the detail that has stunned investigators: the suspects allegedly stayed inside the house for another six to seven hours after the killings.

Police say they ate food, including dates and cucumbers, continued consuming drugs and took a bath before leaving.

Police Reconstruct Rooftop Confrontation

Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud said the two suspects allegedly entered the rooftop through a neighbouring building on Thursday night.

According to investigators, the men were consuming Yaba, a potent methamphetamine-based illicit drug, when Ganapati heard noises and went upstairs to investigate.

Police believe the suspects feared the retired teacher could identify them.

Investigators allege Ganapati was strangled with the gamchha, a thin cotton towel, that he had been carrying on his shoulder.

The disturbance reportedly alerted Pritilata. She went upstairs to find out what was happening and was allegedly strangled with a piece of cloth on the staircase.

The violence then spread to the rest of the family.

Police said Agami and Priyam were also killed during the incident.

Investigators believe Priyam may have been targeted because he knew one of the suspects. Police said the boy was a friend of Apurba, the younger brother of Siddhartha.

According to the investigation, the suspects may have feared that Priyam could identify them or reveal what had happened.

Investigators Find Evidence Inside Home

Investigators said the suspects allegedly did not leave immediately. Instead, they remained at the property for six to seven hours.

Rangpur Metropolitan Police said evidence suggested the men ate food inside the home and continued consuming drugs.

Date seeds and evidence of cucumbers taken from the refrigerator were reportedly recovered. Investigators also said the suspects took a bath before leaving.

For investigators, those details became part of a wider effort to reconstruct the suspects’ movements.

Other clues also complicated the early stages of the probe. Police said bangles that had been tested in fire initially led investigators to consider whether someone with knowledge of gold could have been involved.

Authorities later said analysis of the available evidence helped point investigators towards the two detained suspects.

The investigation was carried out jointly by Rangpur Metropolitan Police, the Criminal Investigation Department and the Detective Branch.

Suspects Allegedly Confess During Questioning

Rangpur DB Deputy Commissioner Sanatan Chakraborty said the two detained men confessed during questioning.

According to his account, investigators questioned the suspects together and separately after detaining them early in the morning.

Police said the questioning produced what they described as a confession to the killings.

That claim, however, remains part of the investigation. The final determination of criminal responsibility will depend on the judicial process and evidence presented before the courts.

Family Found Dead Inside Locked House

The four bodies were recovered at about 11.30 pm on Saturday from the family’s locked house in the Daspara, also known as Machhuapara, area of Rangpur city.

The locations of the bodies added another layer to the investigation.

Ganapati’s body was found on the rooftop. Pritilata and Agami were found on the staircase. Priyam’s body was recovered from underneath a bed inside the house.

Relatives had become increasingly worried after losing contact with the family.

Puja Chakraborty, Pritilata’s younger sister, said she last spoke to her sister on Thursday afternoon.

When the family could no longer be reached and their phones remained switched off, relatives went to the house on Saturday night.

What they found triggered the murder investigation.

The family had recently moved into a newly built three-storey house in the area.

Ganapati had retired from Rangpur Zilla School on December 31 last year. His daughter Agami had completed a master’s degree in English from Rangpur Carmichael College earlier this year, according to The Daily Star.

Priyam was a Class 5 student at Rangpur Zilla School.

No Known Dispute Reported Before Killings

Police said the family had no known disputes or enmity with anyone before the killings.

That detail is significant because investigators are now attempting to establish how an alleged confrontation on the rooftop escalated into the deaths of four members of the same household.

Local resident Sudhangshu Chandra Das said the family had lived in the neighbourhood for about four years.

Ganapati was described by residents as friendly and courteous. The family, however, had not formed close relationships with many people in the neighbourhood, partly because they were relatively new to the area.

Investigators are now examining the sequence of events from the alleged rooftop confrontation through the killings and the suspects’ movements inside the house afterward.
